The\u00a0Los Angeles Film Critics Association\u00a0(LAFCA) voted on the best achievements in film in 2021 on Saturday, announcing its award winners through its Twitter account.<\/p>\n
The organization named Ryusuke Hamaguchi\u2019s breakout drama \u201cDrive My Car\u201d as the best film of the year, with \u201cThe Power of the Dog\u201d taking the runner-up slot. LAFCA flipped the two in the category of best director, awarding \u201cPower of the Dog\u201d helmer Campion with Hamaguchi as the runner-up. With its best picture win, \u201cDrive My Car\u201d has become one of fourteen films to win the top prize from the LAFCA and New York Film Critics Circle. Each of these films has gone on to become a best picture nominee.<\/p>\n
Other big winners included Simon Rex in \u201cRed Rocket\u201d for best actor, Pen\u00e9lope Cruz in \u201cParallel Mothers\u201d for best actress and Ariana DeBose in \u201cWest Side Story\u201d for best supporting actress. Best supporting actor unfolded as a tie between Vincent Lindon for \u201cTitane\u201d and Kodi Smit-McPhee for \u201cThe Power of the Dog.\u201d<\/p>\n
As previously announced, Mel Brooks received the association\u2019s\u00a02021 career achievement award. This year\u2019s winners will be honored alongside Brooks during a ceremony in 2022.<\/p>\n
Last year, the LAFCA named director Steve McQueen\u2019s \u201cSmall Axe\u201d best picture. Chlo\u00e9 Zhao won best director for \u201cNomadland,\u201d which went on to earn her two Academy Awards, for best director and best picture. Chadwick Boseman and Carey Mulligan won for their lead performances in \u201cMa Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom\u201d and \u201cPromising Young Woman,\u201d respectively.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) awarded Lady Gaga with best actress for Ridley Scott\u2019s \u201cHouse of Gucci,\u201d while Benedict Cumberbatch took home best actor for Jane Campion\u2019s \u201cThe Power of the Dog.\u201d The NYFCC named Ryusuke Hamaguchi\u2019s breakout drama \u201cDrive My Car\u201d as the best film of 2021, while Campion took home the best director prize.<\/p>\n
