Longtime \u201cSpider-Man\u201d series producer\u00a0Amy Pascal\u00a0and Marvel Studios president\u00a0Kevin Feige\u00a0have an offbeat filmmaking partnership, as they demonstrated in a new interview.<\/p>\n

In a conversation with the\u00a0New York Times\u2019 Brooks Barnes\u00a0about \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home\u201d and the future of the franchise, the pair addressed\u00a0Pascal\u2019s previous comments\u00a0that Tom Holland would star in another \u201cSpider-Man\u201d trilogy. (She also addressed the comments when\u00a0speaking to\u00a0Variety<\/i>\u2019s Marc Malkin\u00a0on the red carpet on Monday.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re producers, so we always believe everything will work out,\u201d Pascal said. \u201cI love working with Kevin. We have a great partnership, along with Tom Rothman, who runs Sony and has been instrumental, a great leader with great ideas. I hope it lasts forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmy and I and Disney and Sony are talking about \u2014 yes, we\u2019re actively beginning to develop where the story heads next, which I only say outright because I don\u2019t want fans to go through any separation trauma like what happened after \u2018Far From Home\u2019 [the second film in Marvel\u2019s \u2018Spider-Man\u2019 trilogy]. That will not be occurring this time,\u201d Feige added, referring to the 2019 financing dispute between Disney and Sony that called the possibility of \u201cNo Way Home\u201d into question.<\/p>\n

Pascal and Feige also explained how they first began working together. Pascal was Sony\u2019s top movie executive in 2014 when \u201cThe Amazing Spider-Man 2\u201d debuted to widespread poor reviews. She went to Feige for advice on how to continue forward with the character. When he suggested that Marvel Studios make the next \u201cSpider-Man\u201d film, she didn\u2019t take it well.<\/p>\n

\u201cI threw a sandwich at him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said, \u2018I really want you to help on this next movie. We have these great ideas for the next one. It\u2019s amazing stuff,\u2019\u201d Feige recalled. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018I\u2019m not good at that \u2014 giving advice and leaving. The only way I know how to help is if we just make the movie for you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite Pascal\u2019s initial disdain for the idea, she became open to it after Feige made more specific suggestions about how to bring Spider-Man into the\u00a0Marvel Cinematic Universe: \u201c[He] said, \u2018I have an idea. What if Tony Stark makes Peter\u2019s suit?\u2019 And as soon as he said that, I understood the possibilities of what we could do together. To have Iron Man and Spidey in the same world, one rooted more in technological innovation \u2014 the new suit \u2014 and less in medical experimentation, which is where we were confined before, felt so much more modern.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since then, each of Marvel\u2019s Holland-led \u201cSpider-Man\u201d films, which Pascal produces, have been critical and commercial successes. Part of the franchise\u2019s prevalence in pop culture is driven by the secrecy Marvel Studios has become notorious for. Plot and casting details are often kept completely concealed from audiences, and even key cast and crew members.<\/p>\n

Pascal emphasized that her producing strategy is about more than celebrity cameos, so she isn\u2019t concerned about outdoing \u201cNo Way Home\u2019s\u201d roster of guests when it comes to planning for potential \u201cSpider-Man\u201d sequels.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t think about topping yourself in terms of spectacle. Otherwise movies just get larger and larger for no reason, and it\u2019s not a good result,\u201d she said. \u201cBut we do want to always try and top ourselves in terms of quality and emotion. Kevin and I never want to lose sight of one thing: Peter Parker. That he\u2019s a normal kid. That he is orphaned over and over again. That he\u2019s a teenager, so everything in his life is at a heightened pitch and everything matters more than anything. That he\u2019s fueled by goodness and guilt. That he\u2019s striving for a greater cause, and he\u2019s vilified by the press.\u201d<\/p>\n

On a lighter note, Feige commented on Holland\u2019s budding romance with co-star Zendaya. They aren\u2019t the first couple to take their \u201cSpider-Man\u201d romance off-screen: Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst dated while making the original \u201cSpider-Man\u201d movies, and Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone dated while making the \u201cAmazing Spider-Man\u201d movies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took Tom and Zendaya aside, separately, when we first cast them and gave them a lecture,\u201d Pascal said. \u201c\u2018Don\u2019t go there \u2014 just don\u2019t. Try not to.\u2019 I gave the same advice to Andrew and Emma. It can just complicate things, you know? And they all ignored me.\u201d<\/p>\n
