It was replaced by a new Korean War film with lower production values.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cCrossing the Yalu River\u201d from China Media Group debuted Friday to a $3 million three-day opener, coming in fourth. It stars frequent portrayer of Mao Zedong Tang Guoqiang as the controversial leader and Sun Weimin as Zhou Enlai.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Meanwhile, Wanda Pictures\u2019 \u201cFireflies in the Sun,\u201d an adaptation of the 2002 Nick Cassavetes film \u201cJohn Q,\u201d opened first with $54.2 million, according to data from Artisan Gateway. It tells the story about a family that lived a poor but happy life until the son has an accident and needs an expensive treatment, which his father does whatever it takes to obtain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"adm-inline-article-ad-1\" class=\"admz\">\n<div class=\"adma boomerang\" data-device=\"Desktop\" data-width=\"300\">\n<div class=\"pmc-adm-boomerang-pub-div ad-text\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"aniBox\">\n<div id=\"aniplayer_selectJS756300416\">\n<div id=\"aniplayer_selectJS756300416gui\">\n<div id=\"av-caption\">\n<div id=\"av-close-btn-overlay\" class=\"av-pos-top-left\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The original film starring Denzel Washington was not especially well received and grossed $102 million globally.\u00a0<em>Variety<\/em>\u2019s review at the time called it \u201ca rare case of blatant political propaganda in a major Hollywood picture\u2026 bubbling over with melodrama and extreme situations\u201d that served as a \u201cshamelessly manipulative commercial on behalf of national health insurance.\u201d Its black-and-white, overwrought nature likely made it an attractive choice for adaptation to the China market, where high medical costs are a major source of social discontent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Strangely, \u201cFireflies\u201d is billed as a sequel to the 2019 thriller \u201cSheep Without a Shepherd\u201d \u2014 itself an adaptation of the 2013 Indian film \u201cDrishyam\u201d \u2014 capitalizing on that title\u2019s popularity in name alone as \u201cSheep Without a Shepherd 2\u201d without sharing any plot elements. Although it also stars Chopstick Brothers singer Xiao Yang (\u201cDetective Chinatown 1 &amp; 2\u201d), it otherwise doesn\u2019t share a cast. It is instead directed by Dai Mo and features Hong Kong\u2019s Simon Yam and Janice Man alongside him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Both films were produced by \u201cDetective Chinatown\u201d franchise director Chen Sicheng.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Second place title \u201cI Am What I Am,\u201d a family-friendly animation about a boy who aspires to be a top-notch lion dancer, opened second with just $7.5 million. The Cheering Times Media production came in fourth during the week prior off $2.6 million in previews, and has now hit a cume of $10.2 million.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In third place, is the Emperor Motion Pictures blockbuster \u201cSchemes in Antiques,\u201d which grossed a further $3.6 million to bring its cume since its Dec. 3 release up to $61.6 million.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Maoyan Pictures\u2019 dark comedy \u201cBe Somebody\u201d came in fifth with $2.5 million.
