Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, movie theaters have been shuttered as the country\u2019s Islamic militant guerrillas-turned-rulers decide whether they will allow movie screenings. Taliban authorities have also issued a series of \u201creligious guidelines\u201d under which\u00a0Afghanistan\u2019s TV networks can\u2019t broadcast soap operas or dramas featuring female actors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">Meanwhile, censors in Arab-speaking nations across most of the region, which is also referred to as the Middle East, continued in 2021 to ban Hollywood films touching on sensitive religious or political issues, sex and homosexuality, such as\u00a0Marvels\u2019 \u201cEternals,\u201d featuring the first MCU gay superhero, and\u00a0\u201cWest Side Story\u201d which has a transgender character\u00a0named Anybodys portrayed by non-binary actor Iris Menas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"adm-inline-article-ad-1\" class=\"admz\">\n<div class=\"adma boomerang\" data-device=\"Desktop\" data-width=\"300\">\n<div class=\"pmc-adm-boomerang-pub-div ad-text\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"aniBox\">\n<div id=\"aniplayer_selectJS756300416\">\n<div id=\"aniplayer_selectJS756300416gui\">\n<div id=\"av-caption\">\n<div id=\"av-close-btn-overlay\" class=\"av-pos-top-left\">\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Yet, aside from the clock being turned back in Afghanistan and other instances of backlash, the overall sense is that the Arab film and TV industry is making a quantum leap forward in breaking cultural taboos and achieving greater growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left;\">As<span class=\"s2\">\u00a0Egyptian-American filmmaker Dina Amer points out, in Saudi Arabia \u201c<\/span>you used to have to smuggle DVDs into the country in order to watch any kind of film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left;\">By contrast, in early December, Amer\u2019s potent drama\u00a0\u201cYou Resemble Me,\u201d\u00a0which\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">explores the roots of Islamic radicalization through the story of Hasna A\u00eft Boulahcen, who in 2015 was wrongly believed to be Europe\u2019s first female suicide bomber, played at Saudi\u2019s\u00a0inaugural Red Sea International Film Festival\u00a0in Jeddah where it scored the audience award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">The fact that this\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201c<\/span>very radical and subversive film,\u201d as Amer puts it, \u201cabout how an Arab French woman gets radicalized by an ideology that was essentially birthed and exported in the rest of the world from Saudi Arabia,\u201d played in Saudi feels like a huge achievement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Also screening at the Red Sea fest was Maggie Gyllenhaal\u2019s \u201cThe Lost Daughter\u201d which features\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">passionate sex scenes, some including partial nudity, and other pics where lovemaking was shown on screen and nobody batted an eye, though in some cases there were giggles in the audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left;\">At the Cairo Film Festival the previous week, a coming-out doc ironically titled \u201cFiasco\u201d won two prizes. In the film, Lebanese first-time director Nicolas Khoury candidly turns the camera on himself and with humor depicts his gentle rebellion against\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">the social and sexual boundaries set by his family and Lebanese society.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201cFiasco\u201d was placed in a late-night slot in Cairo to keep it under the radar in a country where\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people are known to be the target of violence. But the movie still screened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"adm-inline-article-ad-2\" class=\"admz\">\n<div class=\"adma boomerang\" data-device=\"Desktop\" data-width=\"300\">\n<div class=\"pmc-adm-boomerang-pub-div ad-text\">\n<div id=\"gpt-dsk-tab-mid-article2-uid1\" class=\"adw-300 adh-250\" data-is-adhesion-ad=\"\" data-google-query-id=\"CIG99JS08_QCFRRCHQkdFQsGhw\">\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">Interestingly, Egypt was not among the countries that banned \u201cEternals,\u201d which also played in the United Arab Emirates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s2\">Ignace Lahoud, chief executive of Vox Cinemas, which is West Asia\u2019s largest exhibition chain, says that in the region, \u201ccensorship\u00a0is a reality in this industry,\u201d noting that exhibitors must be respectful of each country\u2019s regulations. Still, the fact that \u201cEternals\u201d was not banned everywhere in his patch can be considered a step forward. \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s3\">The UAE has evolved dramatically from where it was 10 or 15 years ago in terms of what is accepted,\u201d Lahoud notes. On Monday the UAE\u2019s Media Regulatory Office announced on Twitter that it had introduced a new over 21 age rating to its rating system under which the uncensored international version of movies will be shown, though details remain vague.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Vox entered Saudi three years ago, joining what Lahoud calls \u201cthe gold rush\u201d to expand screens in one of the world\u2019s last untapped movie markets. Box office revenue in Saudi has grown to become West Asia\u2019s top market, now expected to triple from\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">$150 million in 2020 to $450 million in 2021, according to research firm Omdia, which forecasts Saudi Arabia to be the tenth largest theatrical market in the world by 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s2\">Others are a bit more cautious, including Lahoud, who says Vox, which to date has\u00a0<\/span>opened 15 cinemas in six Saudi cities \u2013\u2013 accounting for 154 of Saudi\u2019s current roughly 500 screens \u2013\u2013 is \u201cstill learning from the [Saudi] market,\u201d though there\u2019s certainly \u201cstill room for growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s2\">Other regional exhibitors, speaking on background, fear a slowdown at the Saudi box office now that live music events are gaining traction since being allowed in the country in 2019, a watershed moment that Saudi DJ\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\">Ahmad Alammary, aka Baloo, describes as \u201c<\/span>our version of the Berlin Wall falling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s3\">Alammary is chief creative officer at Saudi\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">state-funded promoter MDL Beast, organizers of the now massive Soundstorm electronic dance music festival, the second edition of which kicked off in Riyadh on Dec. 17 with 180,000 people in attendance and female Saudi DJ and producer Cosmicat spinning discs alongside top international EDM stars David Guetta,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">Armin Van Buuren, and Tiesto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s2\">Regardless of the size of Saudi Arabia\u2019s theatrical market\u2019s growth prospects, what\u2019s clear is that it\u2019s now beginning to foster a film and TV industry as it\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s6\">diversifies from an oil-based economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">The kingdom\u2019s announced $64 billion overall investment in the entertainment sector is expected to keep flowing over the next decade, becoming a bonanza\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">for film and TV producers in the region and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">During the Red Sea fest, a flurry of industry announcements were made, including Saudi\u2019s new up to 40% production rebate, which aims to lure more international shoots such as tentpoles like the $100 million sandals-and-camels epic \u201cDesert Warrior,\u201d featuring an all-star international cast led by \u201cCaptain America\u201d star Anthony Mackie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">That movie has been shooting in NEOM, a planned futuristic city situated in the northwest of the kingdom being developed by former Fox exec Wayne Borg into a \u201cstate-of-the-art\u201d media hub. \u201cWarrior\u201d is bankrolled by Saudi-owned broadcasting giant MBC, as is Gerard Butler auctioneer \u201cKandahar,\u201d another big-budget movie with Hollywood elements that\u2019s now shooting in Saudi\u2019s AlUla region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On the political front, Hollywood is tiptoeing back into Saudi f<span class=\"s1\">ollowing the hiatus caused by the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and reports that appear to implicate Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the assassination that prompted media companies from the U.S. and elsewhere to pull out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Just prior to the Red Sea fest, Justin Bieber performed in Jeddah during the first Formula One Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, despite calls from Khashoggi\u2019s wife and human rights campaigners for him to cancel the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">Should Bieber have heeded their call? The question came up in conversations during the Red Sea fest.
