For the second consecutive year, the Palm Springs International Film Festival has canceled its star-studded, in-person awards gala amid rising concerns around COVID-19 and the Omicron variant.<\/p>\n

The annual awards were planned to be presented at a black-tie ceremony held at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Jan. 6, but the Palm Springs International Film Society announced the change of plan\u00a0in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are taking this action due to the recent spike in COVID cases and out of an abundance of caution to ensure the health and safety of the honorees, patrons, and staff,\u201d the statement read. \u201cThe\u00a0Palm Springs Film Awards\u00a0are one of the largest events in the film world with 2,500 guests and more than 1,000 staff in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Film Awards will partner with \u2018Entertainment Tonight\u2019 to celebrate this year\u2019s honorees with details to follow,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cThose who purchased tickets for the Film Awards will be reimbursed. We hope to return to the Film Awards to an in-person event in 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film society also noted that the screening portion\u00a0Palm Springs Film Festival, which runs Jan. 7-17, will still take place and require proof of vaccination and masks in theaters. Details of COVID-19 safety protocols can be found at\u00a0psfilmfest.org.<\/p>\n

Considered a pre-cursor to the Academy Awards and one of the first major award shows of the new year, the festival\u2019s 2022 awards honorees are Kristen Stewart (who earned the Spotlight Award, Actress for \u201cSpencer\u201d), Pen\u00e9lope Cruz (the International Star Award, Actress for \u201cParallel Mothers\u201d), Jane Campion (Director of the Year, \u201cThe Power of the Dog\u201d), Jessica Chastain (the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress for \u201cThe Eyes of Tammy Faye\u201d), Jennifer Hudson (the Chairman\u2019s Award, \u201cRespect\u201d), Andrew Garfield (the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor for \u201cTick, Tick \u2026 Boom!\u201d), Lady Gaga (the Icon Award, \u201cHouse of Gucci\u201d) and Nicole Kidman (the Career Achievement Award,\u201d Being the Ricardos\u201d). The Vanguard Award goes to Sir Kenneth Branagh and the cast of \u201cBelfast\u201d (Caitr\u00edona Balfe, Jamie Dornan, Ciar\u00e1n Hinds and Jude Hill), while the cast of \u201cKing Richard\u201d (Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Jon Bernthal and Tony Goldwyn) nabbed the Ensemble Performance Award.<\/p>\n

This marks the second consecutive year the Palm Springs Film Awards gala has been canceled. For 2021, the film festival nominally acknowledged 11 honorees \u2014 Riz Ahmed (\u201cSound of Metal\u201d), Viola Davis (\u201cMa Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom\u201d), Andra Day (\u201cThe United States vs. Billie Holiday\u201d), Anthony Hopkins (\u201cThe Father\u201d), Daniel Kaluuya (\u201cJudas and the Black Messiah\u201d), Carey Mulligan (\u201cPromising Young Woman\u201d), Leslie Odom Jr. (\u201cOne Night in Miami\u201d), Gary Oldman (\u201cMank\u201d), Chlo\u00e9 Zhao (\u201cNomadland\u201d) and the film \u201cThe Trial of the Chicago 7.\u201d All 11 awardees went on to receive Academy Award nominations, with Hopkins, Kaluuya and Zhao nabbing Oscar trophies.<\/p>\n

In addition,\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0will not be hosting its annual \u201c10 Directors to Watch\u201d and Creative Impact Awards brunch in person. Initially planned for Jan. 7 at the Parker Palm Springs, honorees for that event include Javier Bardem (the Creative Impact in Acting award winner) and Asghar Farhadi (Creative Impact in Directing\u00a0award).<\/p>\n

Variety\u2018s\u00a0<\/em>10 Directors to Watch for 2022 are Aitch Alberto (\u201cAristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe\u201d), Mariama Diallo (\u201cMaster\u201d), Audrey Diwan (\u201cHappening\u201d), Maggie Gyllenhaal (\u201cThe Lost Daughter\u201d), Tatiana Huezo (\u201cPrayers for the Stolen\u201d), Nikyatu Jusu (\u201cNanny\u201d), Megan Park (\u201cThe Fallout\u201d), Cooper Raiff (\u201cCha Cha Real Smooth\u201d), Goran Stolevski (\u201cYou Won\u2019t Be Alone\u201d) and Krystin Ver Linden (\u201cAlice\u201d).<\/p>\n
