Ecuador\u2019s Ana Mar\u00eda Barrag\u00e1n (\u201cAlba\u201d), Brazil\u2019s Jo\u00e2o Paulo Miranda (\u201cMemory House\u201d) and Spain\u2019s Meritxell Colell (\u201cFacing the Wind\u201d) will put awaited new feature film projects through San Sebasti\u00e1n\u2019s\u00a0Ikusmira Berriak, one of Spain\u2019s foremost development labs.<\/p>\n
Also selected for 2022\u2019s edition are a second reputed Latin American auteur, Argentina\u2019s Maximiliano Schonfield (\u201cJes\u00fas L\u00f3pez\u201d) as well as Spain\u2019s Irati Gorostidi (\u201cIn the Rain\u201d) and a second Catalan filmmaker, Jaume Claret (\u201cElla y jo\u201d).<\/p>\n
As part of an eight-week residency, Ikusmira Berriak\u2019s six directors will attend a Tabakalera tutorial Artist\u2019s Space over March 14-April 24, and then return for September\u2019s San Sebastian Festival.<\/p>\n

In the case of Ikusmira Beriak, this brings together the San Sebastian Festival, the most important film event in the Spanish-speaking world, the Tabakalera International Center for Contemporary Culture and the El\u00edas Querejeta Zine Eskola, which collectively are constructing a round-the-year hothouse for new and emerging talent.<\/p>\n
Barrag\u00e1n has developed her Ikusmira project \u201cIvy\u201d at the Zine Eskola; Claret studied there and premiered his short \u201cElla i jo\u201d at San Sebastian\u2019s Nest short film competition; Gorostidi attended the Tabakalera\u2019s Artist\u2019s Space and Miranda\u2019s \u201cMemory House\u201d proved a standout at San Sebastian\u2019s 2020 New Directors strand, the festival\u2019s biggest sidebar. Schonfeld\u2019s Jesus Lopez opened Horizontes Latinos, San Sebastian\u2019s panorama of recent Latin American features.<\/p>\n

As Spain\u2019s transition to democracy comes under new and more skeptical focus \u2013 think Alberto Rodriguez\u2019s upcoming \u201cModelo 77\u201d \u2013 Gorostidi\u2019s bold debut feature examine the defeat of radical ideas of Spain\u2019s \u201870s as a group of libertarian militants abandon their factory work to set up a free-thinking commune in the mountains of Navarre. Observing the fragmentation of the workers\u2019 movement, the film chronicles the \u201ccomplex contradictions in the search for a reduced and isolated social model,\u201d Gorostidi comments.<\/p>\n
\u201cBandeira,\u201d<\/b>\u00a0(Jo\u00e2o Paulo Miranda, Brazil, France)<\/p>\n
Consecrated by \u201cMemory House\u201d \u2013 the only Latin American feature chosen for 2020\u2019s Cannes Official Selection \u2013 Miranda\u2019s \u201cBandeira\u201d was described when announced as a revenge thriller to be shot in the Amazon rainforest. The Ikusmira Berriak announcement confirms more details: The project turns on Jon\u00e1s, a young indigenous gold digger who\u2019s convinced that he\u2019s the chosen one to bring prosperity to his community. But gold gradually plunges him into destructive madness, endangering his own people. \u201c\u2018Bandeira\u2019 follows the same line as my previous films, where my characters always fight against a nature imposed on them,\u201d Miranda says.<\/p>\n

Inspired by a chapter of Mary Shelley\u2019s book, where the Monster surreptitiously observes the daily routine of a family on a farm, much like those shot in the past by the director in Argentina\u2019s Entre Rios, \u201ca voyage through landscapes and modes of existence,\u201d Schonfeld says. It also examines the clash between word and image and asks: Is there some kind of plan for us?<\/p>\n

The third feature from Barrag\u00e1n whose debut, \u201cAlba,\u201d Ecuador\u2019s Oscar submission, world premiered at the 2016 Rotterdam Festival, winning the Lions Film Award, \u201cIvy\u201d turns on a mother, Azucena, 31, who attempts to rekindle a relation with her son, Julio, whom she abandoned after giving birth at the age of 13. \u201cThe tension between mother and son who physically seem almost the same age opens up a space to explore instinct, the Oedipus Complex and anger,\u201d Barrag\u00e1n\u00a0told Variety\u00a0in January, announcing that \u201cHow To Get Away With Murder\u201d star Karla Souza will play the mother.<\/p>\n

A leading light of Catalunya\u2019s\u00a0newest generation\u00a0of directors and producers, Colell\u2019s potential third feature was presented at Ventana Sur\u2019s Proyecta earlier this month. It focuses on Ang\u00e9lica, 50, who records the sounds and stories of the high Andes, which weave together in her fevered mind, capturing the present and past, reality and imagination of the places and people of the mountains and her childhood in Mexico. \u201cA journey through listening that will push Ang\u00e9lica to think about who she is, who she wants to be, and where she comes from,\u201d the synopsis runs.<\/p>\n

Brothers D\u00eddac (14) and Biel (12) bike along the banks of the Danube with their family until Didac meets and is seduced by the mysterious Alexander. As the Danube grows in leaps and bounds, Biel senses he is losing his brother. A \u201creflection on masculinity in brotherly relations,\u201d says Claret.<\/p>\n
