\u201cI\u2019m afraid nobody will like me at my new school,\u201d says the protagonist of \u201cMean Boys\u201d at the beginning of its trailer.<\/p>\n

Growing up is never easy. But it\u2019s especially challenging if you\u2019re old man\u2019s God, you\u2019re a teen Jesus, and you\u2019ve got to control your good works at your new school or you could be identified as the Messiah and be carted off for a premature crucifixion.<\/p>\n

So, in a attempt to fit in \u2013 and a homage to cult U.S. movie \u201cMean Girls,\u201d \u2013 best pal Lazarus comes up with the idea of Jesus trying to go against his best nature and become a mean boy at school.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the basic set-up of \u201cMean Boys,\u201d the 2021 Christmas Special from Brazil\u2019s\u00a0Porta dos Fundos\u00a0whose trailer\u00a0Paramount Plus\u00a0has shared in exclusivity with\u00a0Variety<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The Special is unlikely to go unnoticed by more conservative groups in Brazil. This time round, however, there are some crucial differences. It\u2019s animation, ViacomCBS-owned Porta dos Fundos\u2019 first venture into the medium. It will bow Dec. 15 exclusively on Paramount Plus, when 2020\u2019s Special played YouTube. Backdoor, Mexico\u2019s equivalent to Porta dos Fundos, has created a voiceover for a Spanish-language version (see poster).<\/p>\n

The same irrepressible irreverence remains, however. So in the trailer, Lazarus produces a porn scroll which Jesus supposedly has in backpack as proof he can\u2019t be the Messiah and drags him off to the Sodom and Gomorrah red-light district, where Jesus is seen barfing copiously. Meanwhile, Barrabas \u2013 here the high school bully dressed as if he\u2019s walked straight out of a U.S. high school movie with a jock\u2019s windcheater, sideburns and a greaser pompadour haircut \u2013\u00a0 roughs up his fellow students. Pilot, a preening school principal, invites the prettiest male students and young Roman soldiers to his office.<\/p>\n

\u201cMean Boys\u201d is co-produced by Estricnina Cartoon, a pioneering Brazilian animation series producer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Bible doesn\u2019t talk at all about Jesus when he was young. But he was a teenager and would have had teenage questions and needs so we said: \u2018Let\u2019s talk about them,\u2019\u201d said Porta dos Fundos co-founder Fabio Porchat, creator of the Special, adding that he admired deeply \u201cThe Gospel According to Jesus Christ,\u201d by Portugal\u2019s Nobel Prize winning writer Jos\u00e9 Saramago, which offered a humanized version of the figure. \u201cNot that I\u2019m trying to compare myself with Saramago,\u201d Porchat added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe First Temptation of Christ,\u201d Porta dos Fundos 2019 Christmas Special, featured a possibly gay Christ, sparking a petition to ban the special signed by more than two million people. A temporary ban was accompanied by a Molotov cocktail attack on Porta dos Fundos\u2019 headquarters. (The fire was put out by security guards.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWe make fun of Christians, Evangelicals and Muslims, everybody. We always try to push the envelope. That\u2019s one of our missions,\u201d said Porchat.<\/p>\n

How would he react if nobody complains? \u201cIf everybody complains, that\u2019s a problem. If nobody complains, that\u2019s a problem too.\u201d<\/p>\n
