Before Thursday night\u2019s\u00a0American Cinematheque\u00a0gala, it had been 22 months since\u00a0Scarlett Johansson<\/strong>\u00a0had set foot on a red carpet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is more than dipping my toe in. I feel like I\u2019m getting completely drenched. But it\u2019s exciting,\u201d Johansson told\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0of attending the event held in honor of her near 30-year career.<\/p>\n

Johansson was joined for the big night by her husband, \u201cSaturday Night Live\u2019s\u201d\u00a0Colin Jost\u00a0<\/strong>(who handed her a glass of champagne mid-interview as she made her way down the long line of reporters), and a host of former co-stars and friends, including her\u00a0Marvel\u00a0compatriot\u00a0Jeremy Renner\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Abbie Cornish<\/strong>, as well as her twin brother\u00a0Hunter Johansson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just happy to be out and see people and reconnect and reemerge,\u201d she added, noting that the honor itself was \u201calmost too much to take in. It\u2019s a lot to process.\u201d<\/p>\n

It has been a whirlwind couple of years for the star, who came off her double Oscar-nominated run for \u201cMarriage Story\u201d and \u201cJojo Rabbit\u201d to finally star in and executive produce her long-awaited standalone project \u201cBlack Widow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly making \u2018Black Widow\u2019 was one of the highlights of my career,\u201d Johansson shared. \u201cI loved coming to work every single day working with my dream director Cate Shortland and an incredible cast of actors. I felt so fortunate and thankful every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The same went for her experience as part of the post-production process and having the opportunity to shepherd the project from start to finish.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, when the pandemic hit and we were pushed, like that was disappointing. But obviously it was crazy times,\u201d she continued. \u201cI was really happy that the film was able to be seen in the theater at a time where more people were vaccinated and more people felt safe going. I certainly never wanted people to feel like they were risking their health or their lives to go to the movies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johansson described the whole experience as a \u201csurreal time,\u201d not to mention the fact that she also gave birth to her second child during this period. \u201cA lot was going on,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Things became more complicated still when Johansson filed suit against Disney in July, arguing that the simultaneous streaming release of the \u201cBlack Widow\u201d cannibalized the theatrical gross, and violated her contract. After a public back and forth, the parties\u00a0settled in late September.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing through the Disney lawsuit, when you\u2019re doing something that feels like it\u2019s not been done before, and it feels like it\u2019s uncharted territory, it\u2019s a little \u2026\u201d Johansson began, searching for the right word and accepting the offer of \u201cterrifying.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have a lot of doubt,\u201d she continued. \u201cBut at the same time, I felt like I was standing up for what was right, and now, no one will ever have to deal with that again. So that makes me feel like it was worth it for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor also addressed the public support she received from\u00a0Jamie Lee Curtis\u00a0<\/strong>(who was on hand as one of her presenters) and her\u00a0Marvel co-star Elizabeth Olsen.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was everything, because it can feel very lonely to be in that place,\u201d Johansson said. \u201cJust knowing that all these strong women were standing up with me, felt like I was doing something that was worth it. It was very touching for me. And it buoyed me for a time that was stressful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johansson\u2019s comments regarding the lawsuit were the last to be made during the evening, which kicked off with a few words from\u00a0Jon Favreau<\/strong>, who\u2019s worked with Johansson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as his films \u201cChef\u201d and \u201cThe Jungle Book.\u201d Favreau arrived at the event during dinner and made a beeline for Johansson, who was at the center of the ballroom chatting with Team Marvel, including president\u00a0Kevin Feige\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Victoria Alonso<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Other presenters included \u201cJojo Rabbit\u201d co-stars\u00a0Thomasin McKenzie<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Sam Rockwell\u00a0<\/strong>(who\u2019d also co-starred in \u201cIron Man 2\u201d and appeared virtually, teasing Johansson about the times she\u2019d kicked his butt onscreen), plus\u00a0Andy Richter<\/strong>, who delighted audiences with a clip of the actor\u2019s first on-screen appearance, playing a spelling bee winner in a sketch on \u201cConan\u201d in 1994.<\/p>\n

Feige took the stage to introduce the \u201cBlack Widow\u201d retrospective, touting Johansson\u2019s contributions to the MCU as both the actor who embodied Natasha Romanoff for the last decade and a \u201cvery, very smart producer.\u201d He also celebrated her work as a model for the expanding network of female characters that have followed her lead (name-dropping Carol Danvers, Wanda Maximoff, Shuri, Jennifer Walters, Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan). Among other platitudes, Feige called Johansson, \u201cone of the most talented, versatile and beloved actors of our time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the Marvel chief broke a little news. \u201cWe already are working with Scarlett on another not Black Widow-related top-secret Marvel Studios project,\u201d Feige announced.<\/p>\n

In addition to Favreau and Feige, fellow Marvel stars Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Evans (who noted he first worked with Johansson nearly 20 years ago on 2004\u2019s \u201cThe Perfect Score\u201d) saluted their friend virtually, while Renner served as the final presenter, taking the stage to deliver the American Cinematheque trophy to Johansson<\/p>\n

There, the actor expressed her gratitude to all the co-stars, crew, agents, managers and publicists who\u2019ve supported her over the decades, as well as her mother Melanie, who fostered her love of movies (and possibly introduced her to \u201cSilence of the Lambs\u201d and \u201cSchindler\u2019s List\u201d a little too young.)<\/p>\n

Looking back at one of her earliest roles, 1994\u2019s \u201cNorth,\u201d Johansson said she \u201cknew instantaneously there was no job in the world or a creative family I\u2019d rather be a part of and I still feel that way. \u2026 I\u2019ve only gotten more certain over time that I am doing the job that I\u2019m supposed to be doing \u2014 having a visceral, emotional reaction in a make-believe world. That\u2019s the magic of movies.\u201d<\/p>\n

After making a couple quips about how she contextualized receiving the honor with her therapist, she thanked the American Cinematheque for walking her down memory lane.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never been able to step back and really see the work as part of the whole thing. I still think about line readings I could have improved on from \u2018Her,\u2019\u201d she joked. \u201cBut tonight has been a incredible gift, because it\u2019s allowed me to take pause and take it all in. And to take the temperature and survey the landscape before continuing so gratefully down the path that chose me 30 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johansson shared top billing for the evening with Participant, which was honored with the American Cinematheque\u2019s inaugural Power of Cinema award. Presented by Oscar-winning filmmaker\u00a0Tom McCarthy<\/strong>\u00a0(who made \u201cThe Visitor,\u201d \u201cStillwater\u201d and best picture winner \u201cSpotlight\u201d at the studio), CEO\u00a0David Linde<\/strong>\u00a0accepted the prize on behalf of the company, dedicating it to longtime executive Diane Weyermann who\u00a0died in October.<\/p>\n
