{"id":14509,"date":"2021-11-22T01:54:29","date_gmt":"2021-11-21T22:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blue-subtitle.com\/blog\/?p=14509"},"modified":"2021-11-22T01:54:39","modified_gmt":"2021-11-21T22:24:39","slug":"filming-belfast-meant-scaling-down-for-emotion-haris-zambarloukos-tells-camerimage-film-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blue-subtitle.com\/blog\/filming-belfast-meant-scaling-down-for-emotion-haris-zambarloukos-tells-camerimage-film-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"\ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25Filming \u2018Belfast\u2019 Meant Scaling Down for Emotion, Haris Zambarloukos Tells Camerimage Film Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Cinematographer\u00a0Haris Zambarloukos\u00a0has taken on ambitious visions for his longtime director comrade\u00a0Kenneth Branagh, from the opulent pre-war world of Agatha Christie\u2019s \u201cDeath on the Nile\u201d and \u201cMurder on the Orient Express\u201d to the excesses of \u201cSleuth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But for the duo\u2019s new film \u201cBelfast,\u201d based on Branagh\u2019s childhood home and his family\u2019s encounters with \u201cthe Troubles\u201d of sectarian conflict there, they took a different approach, Zambarloukos says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cIn this case it really was a more personal experience,\u201d the DP told an audience at the\u00a0EnergaCamerimage Film Festival\u00a0of cinematography in Torun, Poland, which he and Branagh attended in person.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cSets were a little bit more open,\u201d said Zambarloukos. \u201cWe left a little bit more chance for things to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"adm-inline-article-ad-1\" class=\"admz\">\n<div class=\"adma boomerang\" data-device=\"Desktop\" data-width=\"300\">\n<div class=\"pmc-adm-boomerang-pub-div ad-text\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"aniBox\">\n<div id=\"aniplayer_selectJS756300416\">\n<div id=\"aniplayer_selectJS756300416gui\">\n<div id=\"av-caption\">\n<div id=\"av-close-btn-overlay\" class=\"av-pos-top-left\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Indeed, some of the most compelling images in \u201cBelfast\u201d were improvised, said Branagh, citing an almost magical vision of the hospital bed of Buddy\u2019s dying grandfather, framed by a reflection of two nurses, suggesting a vision through a veil.<\/p>\n<div class=\"widget widget_cxense\">\n<section class=\"cxense-widget \/\/ \">\n<div id=\"cx-mid-article\" class=\"cxense-widget-div lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-height-100p\" data-widget_id=\"8a00c858b5dc9bbc6730de1cd462cba7848c347c\">\n<div id=\"cx-in-article\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWriting it from a distance of 50 years and determined to see it all from the perspective of a 9-year-old boy, I knew it wouldn\u2019t be objective truth,\u201d says Branagh. \u201cIt didn\u2019t need to be a documentary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Instead, Buddy, the \u201cBelfast\u201d protagonist, sees his world \u201cthrough movies, through football, through religion.\u201d Whether a fire-and-brimstone sermon, a \u201cStar Trek\u201d episode or the shootout climax of \u201cHigh Noon,\u201d Buddy\u2019s world is one where heroes often step in to save the day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Zambarloukos films him drawing a fork in the road, trying to work out the path of righteousness, and dragging his skeptical grannie along with the family to see \u201cChitty Chitty Bang Bang,\u201d a world so wondrous it appears in color.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Zambarloukos argues that filming in black-and-white can be a powerful way to focus the audience on emotion rather than the physical environment of the world on screen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cIt was not so much the esthetic but the emotional aspect of black and white that we were interested in for this film. With black and white you get a more lucid, intense emotion from the performances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Branagh added that his childhood memories of gray Northern Ireland do seem monochrome mostly. \u201cFor me, color came from what was in my imagination,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cBelfast\u201d opens with an event in Buddy\u2019s life that turns it upside down.
