AWARDS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As Europe faces a fresh wave of\u00a0COVID-19, the 34th\u00a0European Film Awards<\/strong>\u00a0will take place as a distanced live event, with attendance limited to nominees and award recipients.<\/p>\n

The in-person ceremony, which will also be broadcast and streamed from Berlin on Dec. 11, will not include the usual audience of academy members, partners and guests from the film industry and the international media.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe decision acknowledges the deteriorating situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic in an increasing number of European countries, and in Germany,\u201d the\u00a0European Film Academy<\/strong>\u00a0said in a statement. \u201cThe pandemic will affect all events usually taking place during the awards weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthijs Wouter Knol<\/strong>, CEO and director of the Academy, said: \u201cThis is much to our regret and we realise that it must come as a huge disappointment to many in Europe. And we, too, are very disappointed. But confronted with the responsibility for such an event, we don\u2019t see another choice. The risk would simply be too high. We will now continue to put all our efforts into making this a special event \u2013 for those who can attend and for those who will follow us from elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most awards are currently voted for online by the over 4,100 members of the Academy.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the\u00a0British Independent Film Awards<\/strong>\u00a0(BIFA) have revealed the first of this year\u2019s award winners for its nine film craft categories and\u00a0Philip Barantini<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cBoiling Point,\u201d which received 11 BIFA nominations this year, has won three awards \u2013 best cinematography sponsored by Dirty Looks and Kodak for Matthew Lewis; best casting sponsored by Casting Society and Spotlight for Carolyn McLeod; and best sound supported by Halo Post for James Drake, Rob Entwistle and Kiff McManus.<\/p>\n

With nine BIFA nominations,\u00a0Joanna Hogg<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cThe Souvenir Part II\u201d has also won three awards \u2013 best costume design for Grace Snell; best editing for Helle Le Fevre; and best production design for St\u00e9phane Collonge.<\/p>\n

Best effects went to Mike Knights, Steven Bray, Dan Martin and Leigh Cranston for their work on\u00a0Rob Savage<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cDashcam,\u201d while best make-up and hair design is won by Vickie Lang, Kristyan Mallett and Donald McInnes for Will Sharpe\u2019s \u201cThe Electrical Life of Louis Wain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clio Barnard<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cAli & Ava,\u201d which has received seven nominations, won best music sponsored by Universal Music Publishing Group for Connie Farr and Harry Escott.<\/p>\n

The winners in all remaining categories will be announced at an in-person ceremony on Dec. 5.<\/p>\n
