After beating the odds last year by hosting a physical edition in the midst of the pandemic, Cannes chief\u00a0Thierry Fremaux\u2019s Lumi\u00e8re festival kicked off in Lyon with great fanfare and prestigious guests including\u00a0Paolo Sorrentino,\u00a0Maggie Gyllenhaal, Netflix\u2019s co-CEO\u00a0Ted Sarandos, Valeria Golino, Joachim Trier, Rossy de Palma, Melanie Laurent and Edouard Baer.<\/p>\n

The festival, which unfolds in the birthplace of the Cinematograph and its creators, the Lumi\u00e8re brothers, is dedicating its 13th edition to its long-time president\u00a0Bertrand Tavernier, the beloved filmmaker who recently died.<\/p>\n

During his opening speech, the usually voluble Fr\u00e9maux had to take a moment to regain his composure as he paid an emotional tribute to Tavernier, his friend and close collaborator, with whom he worked side by side for nearly four decades at the Lumi\u00e8re Institute.<\/p>\n

\u201cBertrand has left us with a heritage that is so major and so immense, and your presence here tonight proves that the adventure will go on,\u201d said Fremaux before a crowd of 5,000 in the Tony Garnier concert hall.<\/p>\n

In a clip, the late Tavernier said, \u201cThat was always the spirit of the festival,\u201d referring to the Lumi\u00e8re festival\u2019s ambition to bring together wide-ranging audiences and enjoy the collective experience of moviegoing.<\/p>\n

While Netflix was once again MIA at Cannes due to the festival\u2019s rule requiring competition titles to open in French theaters, the streamer is out in force at the Lumiere festival. Netflix has four films playing there, including Campion\u2019s \u201cThe Power of The Dog,\u201d Sorrentino\u2019s \u201cThe Hand of God,\u201d and Gyllenhaal\u2019s \u201cThe Lost Daughter,\u201d all of which world premiered at Venice.<\/p>\n

The presence of Sarandos, who made the trip especially to Lyon for the opening, underscores the friendly relationship between Fremaux and Netflix and hints at a potential comeback for the streamer in Cannes.<\/p>\n

In town for just 24 hours, Sarandos took the time to visit Lyon\u2019s Cin\u00e9fabrique film school, that offers a free three-year program to students from diverse backgrounds.<\/p>\n

A special tribute was also paid to the\u00a0late Jean-Paul Belmondo, who attended the festival several times, including in 2013 when Lumi\u00e8re laureate Quentin Tarantino paid tribute to the French New Wave icon with these words: \u201cEven the name Belmondo is not just the name of a movie star, not just the name of a man; it\u2019s a verb that represents vitality, charisma, the force of will. It represents super-coolness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new president of the festival and Institut Lumi\u00e8re set up by Tavernier, actor Ir\u00e8ne Jacob,\u00a0took to the stage and regaled the audience in a duo with French actor and director Alain Chabat with a rendition of \u201cLa chanson d\u2019H\u00e9l\u00e8ne,\u201d the famous song by French composer Philippe Sarde (which he wrote for Claude Sautet\u2019s 1970 \u201cThe Things of Life\u201d), who is being honored at Lumi\u00e8re this year.<\/p>\n

Among the guests were French actor and director Edouard Baer, who will present his upcoming film \u201cAdieu Paris!\u201d along with lead actors, Belgium\u2019s Benoit Poelvoorde and Fran\u00e7ois Damiens, who amused the audience as they tried to tame the rowdy line-up of celebrities at the end of the ceremony by reading out the traditional opening sentence all together.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was followed by the screening of a 4K digital version of Edward Sedgwick\u2019s 1928 silent movie \u201cThe Cameraman\u201d starring Buster Keaton and Marceline Day, long believed to be lost, and restored by the Criterion Collection, the Cineteca di Bologna and Warner Bros. The film was accompanied on the piano by French composer Vincent Delerm \u2013 a perfect way to open what is recognized as one of the leading heritage film festivals in the world.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the opening diner after the screening, with oysters, frogs legs and local delicacies on the menu in the city known as France\u2019s gastronomic capital, British film critic Peter Bradshaw described Lumi\u00e8re as the \u201cshangri-la\u201d: \u201cIt\u2019s this amazing treat, where you get to go and see wonderful restored movies and eat wonderful food. It\u2019s not like Cannes, Venice or Sundance: Lyon offers something different.\u201d Asked what that is, he enthused: \u201cHistory, the culture of cinema. There may be premieres, but they are often built into a retrospective, as we see with Jane Campion this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

While its growing influence on the film industry is undeniable, Lumi\u00e8re remains first and foremost true to its motto \u201cun festival pour tous\u201d \u2013 a festival for all \u2013 filling cinema theaters at sold-out screenings already on Day One.<\/p>\n

The Lumi\u00e8re film festival runs until the 17th of October.<\/p>\n
