New York-based distribution company\u00a0Grasshopper Film\u00a0and Gratitude Films\u00a0<\/span>have jointly acquired U.S. distribution rights to Italian director\u00a0<\/span>Michelangelo Frammartino\u2019s Venice Special Jury Prize winner\u00a0\u201cIl Buco,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>about a group of speleologists who in 1961 discover Europe\u2019s deepest cave.<\/span><\/p>\n

The deal was negotiated by Ryan Krivoshey of\u00a0<\/span>Grasshopper Film with Nadine Rothschild\u00a0<\/span>of Paris and Berlin-based Coproduction Office on the eve of the U.S. premiere of \u201cIl Buco\u201d at the\u00a0New York Film Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gratitude, which is based in Los Angeles and Mumbai, is headed by Anu Rangachar, a producer and the former programmer for the Mumbai Film Festival.<\/p>\n

With \u201cIl Buco\u201d Frammartino, whose dialogue-free \u201cLe Quattro Volte\u201d made a global splash in 2010, has segued with another similarly eclectic pic that has no dialogue or music.<\/span><\/p>\n

His latest work\u00a0reconstructs the\u00a0<\/span>young cave scientists\u2019 journey to explore the depth of the Bifurto Abyss, 700 meters below Earth in the pristine Calabrian hinterland.\u00a0<\/span>Pic is lensed by Swiss cinematographer\u00a0Renato Berta,\u00a0whose credits include Louis Malle\u2019s Venice Golden Lion winner \u201cAu revoir les enfants.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Il Buco\u2019 is a stunning masterwork,\u201d said Krivoshey in a statement, calling Frammartino\u2019s long-gestating work \u201ca beautiful meditation on nature and humanity and a truly wondrous big-screen experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The plan is to release \u201cIl Buco\u201d in U.S. theaters in 2022.<\/p>\n

The film, which stars Paolo Cossi, Jacopo Elia, Denise Trombin, and Nicola Lanza, is produced by Marco Serrecchia, Frammartino and Philippe Bober. The production companies behind it are Doppio Nodo Double Bind and Rai Cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grasshopper\u2019s upcoming releases include Italian trio Pietro Marcello, Francesco Munzi and Alice Rohrwacher\u2019s doc \u201cFutura\u201d; U.S. director Todd Chandler\u2019s doc \u201cBulletproof\u201d; Colombian filmmaker Camilo Restrepo\u2019s \u201cLos Conductos\u201d; and \u201cFeathers,\u201d from Egypt\u2019s Omar El Zohairy, which won\u00a0<\/span>the Grand Prize for Best Film in the Cannes Critics\u2019 Week.<\/p>\n

Grasshopper Film and Gratitude Films previously acquired\u00a0<\/span>Bangladeshi director\u00a0Abdullah\u00a0Mohammad Saad\u2019s\u00a0\u201cRehana\u201d which they plan to release in U.S. theaters next year.<\/span><\/p>\n
