Two of Spain\u2019s highest-profile upcoming horror titles got release dates and trailers today,\u00a0David Casademunt\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cEl p\u00e1ramo<\/strong>\u201d (formerly \u201cLa bestia\u201d) at\u00a0Netflix<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Amazon Prime Video\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0horror anthology \u201cHistorias para no dormir<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEl p\u00e1ramo\u201d is the highly anticipated feature debut of award-winning short filmmaker\u00a0Casademunt, and boasts a small yet star-filled cast including\u00a0Inma Cuesta<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201cThe Bride\u201d),\u00a0Roberto \u00c1lamo<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201cThe Skin I Live In\u201d) and\u00a0Asier Flores<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201cPain and Glory\u201d). The film is set in an isolated cabin where a family of three are visited by a terrible monster which threatens the ties that bind them. It will world premiere on Oct. 11 at the\u00a0Sitges Film Festival<\/strong>\u00a0and hit Netflix worldwide on Jan. 26, 2022.\u00a0Rodar y Rodar<\/strong>\u00a0produces.<\/p>\n

Amazon Prime Video and Spanish broadcaster\u00a0RTVE\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0reboot of\u00a0Chicho Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez Serrador\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0legendary Spanish horror anthology series \u201cHistorias para no dormir\u201d\u00a0will hit the streaming platform on Nov. 5. The series features terrifying episodes directed several of Spain\u2019s biggest genre filmmakers including Oscar-nominee\u00a0Rodrigo Sorogoyen<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201cMother,\u201d \u201cRiot Police\u201d), \u201cRec\u201d co-writer-director\u00a0Paco Plaza<\/strong>, \u201cThe Bride\u201d director and co-writer\u00a0Paula Ortiz<\/strong>\u00a0and Sitges European Fantasy Film Grand Prize-winner\u00a0Rodrigo Cort\u00e9s<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201cBuried\u201d).\u00a0ViacomCBS International Studios<\/strong>\u00a0co-produces.<\/p>\n

PRE-SALES<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Studio 100<\/strong>\u00a0has closed a raft of pre-AFM sales for its upcoming feature \u201cQuixotes \u2013 The Heirs of La Mancha<\/strong>,\u201d currently in production and scheduled for delivery in late 2022. Co-produced by Argentina\u2019s Studio 100 and\u00a0GF Films<\/strong>\u00a0and Germany\u2019s\u00a0M.A.R.K.13-Com<\/strong>, \u201cQuixotes\u201d is an animated adventure-comedy retelling the legendary Spanish stories written by Miguel de Cervantes and first published in 1605. Previously it was announced that\u00a0Constantin Film<\/strong>\u00a0had picked up the film in all German-speaking territories, and now Studio 100 has confirmed that the feature has also sold in Russia, CIS territories, Poland, Portugal, Israel, Bulgaria, the Balkans and the Baltics. Negotiations are also underway in other territories, and Studio 100 plans to announce further deals after AFM.<\/p>\n

ADAPTATION<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Christopher Granier-Deferre\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0U.K.-based\u00a0Poisson Rouge Pictures<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201cScarborough\u201d) has optioned\u00a0Ovidia Yu\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0Singapore-set crime novels \u201cThe Tree Mysteries<\/strong>\u201d for TV adaptation. The stories feature a resolute young woman masterfully navigating the racist, sexist bigotry of the 1940\u2019s British island colony. Poisson Rouge aims to cover the first six books in two seasons and to deliver the series to screen around 2023. The company is currently meeting with show runners and writers from across the region and from the Southeast Asian diaspora. \u2013\u00a0Patrick Frater<\/em><\/p>\n

DISTRIBUTION<\/h3>\n

German distribution company\u00a0Studio Hamburg Enterprises<\/strong>\u00a0has acquired international distribution rights to \u201cBerlin Legal<\/strong>\u201d from\u00a0UFA Fiction<\/strong>, commissioned by\u00a0ARD Degeto<\/strong>. \u201cDeutschland 89\u2019s\u201d\u00a0Randa Chahoud<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Stefan B\u00fchling<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201cThe White Snake\u201d) direct the political drama, inspired by true events and touching on themes such as hate speech, personal rights and fake news.\u00a0Felice G\u00f6tze<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201c\u00dcber die Grenze\u201d) and\u00a0Lena Kammermeier<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201cBleiben will ich wo ich nie gewesen bin\u201d) co-wrote the series, which features an impressive ensemble cast including Lavinia Wilson (\u201cDeutschland 89\u201d), Stefan Kurt, Annika Kuhl, Rainer Sellien, Michaela Caspar, Maryam Zaree (\u201c4 Blocks\u201d), Niels Bormann (\u201cDeutschland 89\u201d), Aaron Altaras, Sebastian H\u00fclk, Sophie Rois (\u201cBarbarians\u201d), and Jacob Matschenz (\u201cBerlin Babylon\u201d).<\/p>\n

COMMISSION<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Sky Kids<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Peacock<\/strong>\u00a0have teamed to co-commission a pair of new kids programs. \u201cThe Makery<\/strong>,\u201d produced by Richard Hunt, is a make-and-do series for young children in which host Nim Odedra instructs at-home audiences how to create art, toys and costumes from cardboard boxes. Drama series \u201cTake Note<\/strong>\u201d (Lambur Entertainment) follows 11-year-old protagonist Calvin Richards through a rollercoaster summer as the boy participates on a high-profile American singing contest show. Both shows were commissioned for Sky by\u00a0Lucy Murphy<\/strong>. They are executive produced by Ian France and Estelle Hughes and will air on Sky Kids and streaming service\u00a0NOW<\/strong>\u00a0in early 2022.\u00a0NBCUniversal Global Distribution<\/strong>\u00a0is selling both series internationally.<\/p>\n

HIRING<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As part of the launch of\u00a0\u00a0its new TV Studios,\u00a0TFS<\/strong>\u00a0managing director\u00a0Cara Shappard<\/strong>\u00a0has hired\u00a0Edward Harvey<\/strong>\u00a0as the company\u2019s head of\u00a0TV Studios<\/strong>. A 30-year industry vet, Harvey most recently worked at BT Studios, helping to expand the company\u2019s indie client base while proposing new productions, among them: \u201cLove Island Aftersun,\u201d \u201cLast Leg Paralympics\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m a Celeb Daily Drop.\u201d Earlier in his career, Harvey spent 25 years working at ITV\u2019s\u00a0The London Studios<\/strong>\u00a0and was key in several major transitions there including the shift from SD to HD, linear to non-linear editing and a shift to 5.1 facilities. Harvey will operate out of the new TV Studio at Twickenham, designed as a bespoke production space for entertainment shows.<\/p>\n

INCENTIVES<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Film Development Council of the Philippines<\/strong>\u00a0(FDCP) and the\u00a0FilmPhilippines Office<\/strong>\u00a0(FPO) have picked seven film and TV projects to back financially for the second cycle of the FilmPhilippines Incentives Program. In total, PHP 26 million ($516,000) will be distributed to\u00a0International Co-Production Fund<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0ASEAN Co-Production Fund<\/strong>\u00a0recipients. Additionally, productions receiving the region\u2019s Film Location Incentive Program will be eligible for a 20% cash rebate, capped at PHP 10 million ($200,000) on eligible expenses accrued within the Philippines.<\/p>\n
