Audrey Diwan\u2019s Venice winner and timely abortion drama \u201cHappening,\u201d Julia Ducournau\u2019s Cannes Palme d\u2019Or-winning horror film \u201cTitane,\u201d and Cedric Jimenez\u2019s cop thriller \u201cBac Nord\u201d have been shortlisted by France\u2019s Oscar committee. The French Oscar candidate is expected to be selected next Tuesday.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a milestone year for French cinema and female directors, who won the top prizes at the biggest international film festivals, Cannes and Venice. Some other big-name directors were rumored to be in the pipeline for consideration, notably Xavier Giannoli with \u201cLost Illusions,\u201d Celine Sciamma with \u201cPetite Maman\u201d and Jacques Audiard with \u201cParis, 13th District.\u201d It turns out, however, that neither of them entered the race, letting \u201cHappening\u201d and \u201cTitane\u201d take center stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cBac Nord,\u201d which is co-written by Diwan, was pushed by Netflix and the movie\u2019s French co-producer\/distributor StudioCanal. An unlikely candidate for the international feature film race, the star-studded thriller opened at Cannes, out of competition, and went on be a box office hit in France.<\/p>\n

The stakes are high this year. Although French cinema has shined at the Academy Awards on many occasions, including last year with Florian Zeller\u2019s French-produced \u201cThe Father\u201d scooping a pair of\u00a0Oscars, the country\u00a0hasn\u2019t had an Oscar win in the international feature film category\u00a0in 30 years \u2014 despite being the most-nominated country.<\/p>\n

Diwan is only the fifth woman to have won the Golden Lion at Venice with \u201cHappening,\u201d while Ducournau was the second female director to win the Palme d\u2019Or with \u201cTitane\u201d (following Jane Campion\u2019s tie with Chen Kaige for \u201cThe Piano\u201d in 1993). \u201cHappening\u201d has a strong momentum, tackling the issue of abortion through a powerful adaptation of Annie Ernaux\u2019s semi-autobiographical novel set in 1963 that strikes a chord in today\u2019s world. Ducournau\u2019s \u201cTitane\u201d is also well-positioned, having recently won the people\u2019s choice award at Toronto, where is played in the Midnight Madness section. Neon just debuted the film across 562 screens to fairly satisfying numbers.<\/p>\n

Each U.S. distributor \u2014 IFC Films\/FilmNation for \u201cHappening,\u201d Neon for \u201cTitane\u201d and Netflix for \u201cBac Nord\u201d \u2014 will be on the ground in Paris on Tuesday to make a case for their respective title before the French committee, along with the films\u2019 producers and sales agents.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s French Oscar committee includes Julie Delpy; Zeller; producers Iris Knobloch and Alain Goldman, whose credits include the Oscar-winning film \u201cLa Vie En Rose\u201d; Emilie Georges, the Oscar-winning producer of \u201cCall Me by Your Name\u201d and founder of Memento International; and Gr\u00e9gory Chambet, co-founder of the sales company WTFilms. The committee also has three permanent members: Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fr\u00e9maux; UniFrance president Serge Toubiana; and Elisabeth Tanner, talent agent and representative of the Cesar Academy.<\/p>\n

Wild Bunch reps both \u201cHappening\u201d and \u201cTitane,\u201d and has sold the two films around the world. \u201cHappening\u201d is produced by Rectangle Productions, while \u201cTitane\u201d is produced by Kazak Productions. \u201cBac Nord\u201d was produced by Chi-Fou-Mi Productions.<\/p>\n
