Juan Maris\u00e9\u2019s \u201cCamionero,\u201d Laura Baumeister\u2019s \u201cDaughter of Rage\u201d and Ion Bors\u2019 \u201cCarbon\u201d triumphed Wednesday at San Sebastian Festival\u2019s prize ceremony for winners at its main industry competitions: the Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum and WIP Latin America and WIP Europa pix-in-post showcases.<\/p>\n

Also among victors were Juan Andr\u00e9s Arango\u2019s \u201cWhere the River Begins,\u201d Mar\u00eda Zanetti\u2019s \u201cAlemania,\u201d Carlos Lechuga\u2019s \u201cVicenta B.,\u201d and Eduardo Crespo\u2019s \u201cThe Wind\u2019s Cave,\u201d the latter walking off with the trophy at San Sebasti\u00e1n\u2019s Ikusmira Berriak, fast emerging as one of the key young talent hubs in Spain.<\/p>\n

Three of the seven winning titles are from Argentina, a sign of the country\u2019s undeniable depth in talent as its industry, with COVID-19 on the wane, continues to be whammied by economic crisis.<\/p>\n

The caliber of many Latin American producers with projects at the Forum suggest another strong year for an event which has consolidated as one of the strongest co-production events in Europe \u2013 at a time when production partnerships looks like the only way for filmmakers to finance an art film of any ambitions.<\/p>\n

Co-written by Marise and Spanish director Javier Rebollo, a San Sebastian 2009 best director winner for \u201cWoman Without Piano,\u201d \u201cCamionero\u201d took the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum Best Project Award for an Argentine-set tale of male angst, joy and solitude.<\/p>\n

The project is described by Marise as a road movie without a road, with mechanics, prostitutes, men who lead double-lives and absent characters. Spain\u2019s Lolita Films and Argentina\u2019s Amateur Cinema produce.<\/p>\n

Now a double prize winner at San Sebastian without even being finished \u2013 it swept three of the four prizes on offer at its 2019 Forum \u2013 \u201cDaughter of Rage\u201d was always a frontrunner at WIP Latam, backed by no less than six production partners from Nicaragua, Mexico, Netherlands, Germany, France, Norway, and offering a potent mix of biting social realist and oneiric lyricism.<\/p>\n

It turns on 11-year-old Mar\u00eda who seethes with rage at her mother\u2019s abandonment of her at a garbage dump in Managua, Nicaragua\u2019s capital. She uses her dreams to explain what\u2019s happened.<\/p>\n

The WIP Europa Industry Award and WIP Europa Award both went to \u201cCarbon,\u201d the first feature from Moldova\u2019s Bors, whose debut short \u201cOne Less One More\u201d scooped the best international short debut award at Spain\u2019s Huesca Festival. Set in the \u201890s, \u201cCarbon\u201d sees two men, Dima and Vasea, enlist in the army. On their way to the front, they stumble across a carbonized body and set out to establish its identity It soon proves an absurd act.<\/p>\n

Further plaudits at the Forum went to Arango\u2019s \u201cWhere the River Begins\u201d and Zanetti\u2019s \u201cAlemania.\u201d In development at Paola P\u00e9rez\u2019s Inercia Pel\u00edculas, \u201cRiver\u201d weighs in as a jungle set relationship drama between and an Embera woman and young white gang member. It\u2019s the third feature from on-the-rise Colombian auteur Arango, director of Cannes\u2019 2012 Un Certain Regard title \u201cLa Playa D.C.\u201d and the multi-prized \u201cX500.\u201d<\/p>\n

Set up at Juan Pablo Miller\u2019s Buenos Aires-based Tarea Fina \u2013 producer of crafted features such as Pablo Giorgelli\u2019s Cannes Camera d\u2019Or winner \u201cLas Acacias,\u201d Ariel Rotter\u2019s \u201cIncident Light\u201d and Paula Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s \u201cThe Sleepwalkers,\u201d Argentina\u2019s Oscar submission \u2013 Zanetti\u2019s feature debut centers on a teen girl\u2019s coming of age drama, set for the most part in a town near Buenos Aires.<\/p>\n

Offering an oblique acknowledgement of the passing of an era, Lechuga\u2019s \u201cVicente B.,\u201d which nabbed the Egeda Platino Industria Award for the Best WIP Latam film, turns on a santera in modern-day Havana who can see people\u2019s future. When her son abandons Cuba, she\u2019s unable to understand, however, what\u2019s happening to her life or why she\u2019s being left alone in Cuba.<\/p>\n

The production is lead produced by Claudia Calvi\u00f1o at Cuba\u2019s Cacha Films and sold by Habanero. It marks the third feature from Carlos Lechuga, whose \u201cSanta and Andr\u00e9s\u201d played Toronto and San Sebasti\u00e1n\u2019s Horizontes Latinos in 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Wind Grotto,\u201d from Argentine director-screenwriter and DoP Crespo, centers on Horacio, a veterinarian who emigrated to Italy from Argentina several years ago. He lives with his young daughter Mara, an introvert who is passionate about caving. When they meet deep in the mountains, however, they finally open up to each other. Crespo\u2019s \u201cWe Will Never Die\u201d competed at San Sebastian last year.<\/p>\n
