One year after \u201cSchitt\u2019s Creek\u201d had its historic sweep at the Emmys \u2014 becoming the first comedy to win\u00a0every major award\u00a0\u2014 its co-creator\u00a0Dan Levy\u00a0has signed a new deal with\u00a0Netflix.<\/p>\n
In the deal, which is said to be eight figures under competitive circumstances, Levy will work on both movies and television (the TV part will begin in July of next year, after Levy\u2019s deal with ABC Signature ends). He\u2019ll start work immediately on the film side, on an untitled romantic comedy that he\u2019ll star in, write, produce and direct. Sister\u2019s Stacey Snider and Kate Fenske will also produce with Levy. No further details about the project were announced.<\/p>\n
Levy and Netflix was a marriage waiting to happen: It was the streamer that propelled \u201cSchitt\u2019s Creek\u201d \u2014 which premiered on Pop TV in 2015 \u2014 into the stratosphere. In a\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0cover story about the show in April 2020, Eugene Levy, \u201cSchitt\u2019s Creek\u201d co-creator and Dan Levy\u2019s father, told\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0that when the comedy began streaming on Netflix in 2017, the effect was \u201cenormous and immediate.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou could feel it wherever you went \u2014 on the street, at an airport, in a restaurant, more people were coming up saying, \u2018Love the show!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n In the announcement for the deal on Friday, Dan Levy echoed his father\u2019s assertion. \u201cNetflix offered \u2018Schitt\u2019s Creek\u2019 a second home at just the right time and opened the doors to a whole new audience for us,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cWatching the show thrive there has only enhanced my excitement about continuing to tell specific, meaningful stories with them in both TV and feature film. A full circle moment.\u201d<\/p>\n Netflix\u2019s Scott Stuber, the streamer\u2019s head of global film, and Bela Bajaria, the head of global series, sang Levy\u2019s praises together: \u201cDan Levy is an incredible all-around creative talent, who thoughtfully approaches every story with a meaningful perspective. His work on \u2018Schitt\u2019s Creek\u2019 charmed audiences around the world and we\u2019re thrilled to partner and create new films and shows with Dan.\u201d<\/p>\n Last month, Hulu ordered a pilot presentation for \u201cStanding By,\u201d an animated comedy from Levy and former \u201cSchitt\u2019s Creek\u201d writer Ally Pankiw \u2014\u00a0that is still on track, as is Levy\u2019s other development from the ABC deal.<\/p>\n Last year, when\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0asked Levy what he wanted to do after \u201cSchitt\u2019s Creek,\u201d\u00a0he said: \u201cI want to keep telling stories that mean something to me, and that are potentially joyful. My list of ideas that I\u2019ve been scratching down over the past six years while I\u2019ve been doing this show is anything from thrillers to dramas, to other comedies to musicals.\u201d<\/p>\n Levy is repped by WME, MGMT Entertainment, and Morris Yorn.<\/p>\n
